"There is none that can deliver out of My hand"

As a Christian, it is sometimes hard to endure. Often, our own frustrations and failures poison our hope. Other times we find ourselves disappointed in others who “know better” but continue in a life of sin. Still other times we are weakened by the trials of life that everyone deals with: sickness, death, financial stresses, etc. We have no lack of spiritual enemies.

In Deuteronomy 32 we have recorded for us the Song of Moses. In this long address to the nation of Israel, Moses strongly criticizes Israel for its rebellion against God. They are rebuked for following strange gods and idols. All the while they had forgotten the one true God who had delivered them up out of Egypt. They had failed. But even in this time of despair, God offered hope.

When things looked their worst, the enemies of Israel said, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge…Let them rise up and help you; let them be your protection.” (Deut 32:37-38) Read God’s answer, “See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.” (Deut 32:39) Moses wasn’t writing to a faithful and just group of believers. He was writing to obstinate rebels. Yet he reminded them that God was in control. They rested in His care.

Although the nation of Israel was surrounded by nations larger and stronger than itself, God assured them they could not be taken. There was no power on the planet strong enough to reach into God’s hand to remove his children. And today, we are His children if we obey His will. Revelation 21:6-7 says, “And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.  The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”

Salvation is a strange thing. It can be lost but not stolen. It can be thrown away but not wrestled away. It can be surrendered but not plundered. When we live in fear of our salvation being taken away from us, we are living in ignorance. The only mortal wound that can be suffered in our spiritual life is one that is self-inflicted. So we must stay alert to our own spiritual growth. We must conquer.

You are not perfect. God never expected you to be; therefore He has not abandoned you to your enemies. When our spiritual enemies threaten, think again about the Song of Moses and the promise God made to his children. You are His child, resting in His care. And now, just like then, God reminds us, “There is none that can deliver out of my hand.”
